GROSSE POINTE ANIMAL ADOPTION SOCIETY
Welcome to the internet home of the Grosse Pointe Animal Adoption Society (GPAAS). Founded in 1997, our mission is to serve the Grosse Pointes and neighboring communities as a foster home based, non-euthanasia, organization that finds suitable homes for indoor companion animals that have been abandoned, surrendered or found. Many thanks to the people that work so hard to make it happen every day here at GPAAS. We place approximately 500+ companion animals annually and have placed over 6,500 since 1997. GPAAS is also a State Licensed Animal Protection Facility serving those municipalities with which we have contracts.
FIREWORK SEASON OFFICIALLY HERE! KEEP YOUR PETS SAFE!
Fireworks are fun for our kids but frightening for our pets. Below are some suggestions to keep your pets safe during the next two weeks of frequent fireworks.
Indoor cats- watch for sudden escapes out the door.
Indoor/outdoor cats- keep them inside for the next couple of weeks.
Identification- if your cat will wear identification on a collar, make sure they do so now.
Indoor and outdoor dogs- make sure they have some type of identification on even if you write name and number on the collar with a magic marker.
Outdoor dogs- make sure they are secure and cannot break free or jump fences. If at all possible bring them indoors at night.
Indoor dogs- take them outdoors on a leash only. Go out with your dog and do not leave it alone at all.
Use air conditioning or fans to disguise the fireworks noise. Radio and TV can also help. Cats may hide under beds and in closets. Dogs may hide in bath tubs or basements. Remember that they don’t know what’s causing the noise and they think the world is ending!
If your cat or dog becomes lost, notify the police department in which you live. Leave a report of your lost pet with them. Notify the shelter that handles your city and leave a report with them. If your pet is not recovered in 24 hours, you should spread your search to all local shelters as animals will keep running as long as the fireworks keep making frightening sounds which may lead them into other cities.
